The Day of the Canary Islands – Día de las Canarias

The Day of the Canary Islands (Día de las Canarias) is a public holiday in the Canary Islands, celebrated on 30 May each year. This event celebrates the islands’ culture, history, people and my favourite: food. It marks the anniversary of the first session of the autonomous Canary Islands Parliament’s, which was on 30 May, 1983.
I was surprised today to see plenty of people (mainly women and children, very few men) wearing traditional Canarian outfits in the street.
Now THIS is Gran Canaria Style! Have a look!

A curio: As I’ve read, one of the special events organised on this day are … wait for it… „displays of cattle pulling sleighs“. Yep, you got it right. Now, google images will show you a few photos of cows (cattle) pulling sleighs in their natural environment – on the snow. But there’s also this photo:

This was taken in mainland Africa. Maybe here they pull the sled on the beach? I haven’t seen it, so could any Canarian reader comment on this? Send me a photo?

Pop Up Store Made in Gran Canaria

Nabil

One of the people who I met at the Fashion Lab in Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño was Nabil. He came to the fashion show because his girlfriend was one of the designers who presented their works at the show. Nabil is from Las Palmas and he studies here.

Una de las personas que encontré en el Fashion Lab en la Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño fue Nabil. Vino a el desfile porque su novia fue una de las diseñadoras. Nabil es de Las Palmas y estudia aquí.

Here are a few photos from yesterday’s fashion show in Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño Gran Canaria, of which I informed on Thursday. Unfortunately, I was late because I couldn’t find the place, google maps were misleading and my GPS went crazy, so there are very few pics and they’re of rather bad quality but… you can watch a video from the catwalk on the FB Fan Page of this blog, at https://www.facebook.com/GranCanariaStyle

Karluscka de La Coruña

As I was on the bus line 17, Karluscka got on it with her friend. She instantly attracted my attention and I SO wanted to take some photos of her, but I didn’t want to make a scene on the bus. Therefore, I started to pray “God, may she get off at San Telmo, like me!”. And God heard my prayer again.
Karluscka is a student in Arts School in Granada and she’s currently travelling around Spain working on a project.

Cuando estaba en el autobús número 17, Karluscka se subió con un amigo suyo. Atrajo tanto mi atención que quise sacarle fotos, pero no quería montar un número en el autobús. Por eso, empecé a rezar:”¡Dios, que se baje en San Telmo, como yo!” Y, una vez más, Dios escuchó mis plegarias. 
Karluscka es una estudiante de la Escuela de Arte de Granada y últimamente viaja por toda España porque está trabajando en un proyecto.

On Friday, 24th May the students of the School of Arts and Design will present their works during a fashion show in the “salón de actos” et their school in Avenida de Canarias nº 44 (next to Pineda building), Las Palmas.

Gran Canaria Moda Calida

“El Cabildo Insular de Gran Canaria, en el marco de sus competencias y en aras de desarrollar una política de fomento empresarial en el sector de textil de moda, ha venido desarrollando, desde 1996 y a través de su Consejería de Industria, Comercio y Artesanía, el Programa “GRAN CANARIA MODA CALIDA”.
Dicho Programa pretende impulsar y promover la industria textil de la Isla, implementando medidas para mejorar la gestión empresarial, la formación e información. A la vez, se desarrolla una política de promoción y difusión de la marca y de las empresas y diseñadores adscritos al Programa, que comprende entre otras actuaciones específicas, la realización de la Pasarela Internacional de Moda Baño Gran Canaria, la asistencia a Ferias de Moda nacionales e internacionales o campañas publicitarias. El objetivo último es el fomento del sector industrial moda-confección mediante la creación y/o desarrollo de empresas competitivas y exitosas a nivel local, nacional o, en su caso, internacional, que contribuyan de forma significativa a la creación de riqueza y empleo en la economía insular.”

Krystyna and Canarian jewellery

Krystyna and her sister Eva, from Poland, went to Bodegón de Pachichi (Calle Los Martínez de Escobar, Las Palmas) to try the probably best mojo in Gran Canaria.
Krystyna (on the left) was wearing a pendant bought in Puerto de Mogán. It is a typical Canarian piece of jewellery – made of pieces of black lava framed in silver, forming the shape of a butterfly. I’m lovin’ it!

Krystyna y su hermana Eva, de Polonia, fueron al Bodegón de Pachichi (en la calle Los Martínez de Escobar) para probar el probablemente mejor mojo de Gran Canaria.
Krystyna (a la izquierda) llevaba un colgante que había comprado en Puerto de Mogán. Es una joya típica canaria – hecha con trozos de lava negra enmarcada en plata, en forma de mariposa. ¡Me encanta!
