On Friday, September 13., in the Paper Club the new grancanarian brand, Mal Kharma, presented their collection for the winter 2013/14, the second collection in the history of the company. It was not a conventional catwalk, however, but a performance as exceptional and sexy as the garments which the models were presenting. Check it out here.
The founders of the brand are two young guys, Maury García and Daniel García who are respectively 22 and 23 years old.
Maury has been weaned on dressmaking – his mother is a dressmaker and for years she has had her own workshop where she has been making costumes for opera and theatre and where Maury has been helping her since he was a teenager. Dressmaking does not run in the veins of Daniel, who started to help out in the workshop as a friend of Maury. But he has a passion for fashion and he took a course of image consultancy and personal shopper in Escuela Canaria Imagen y Moda in Las Palmas. For his part, Maury took the first year of dressmaking course at Instituto de La Minilla, also in Las Palmas. But the young designer prefers practice to theory: “In six months in a workshop you will learn more than in three years at a school. At school you learn about problems when you encounter them but there they do not tell you how to resolve them, you have to look for a solution on your own, alone. In a workshop you observe and and learn>>.
El viernes 13 de Septiembre en The Paper Club la joven marca grancanaria, Mal Kharma, presentó su colección invierno 2013/14, la segunda colección para esta joven empresa. No se trató de una pasarela convencional, sino un performance tan insólito y sexy como las prendas que presentaron las modelos. Miralo aquí.
Los fundadores de la marca son dos chicos jovenes, Maury García y Daniel García, quienes tienen tan solo 22 y 23 años.
Maury mamó la costura desde la infancia – su madre es modista y hace años tiene su taller, donde prepara vestuario de ópera y teatro y donde Maury le ha ayudado desde que era un adolescente. Sin embargo, la costura no corre por las venas de Daniel, él empezó su andadura en la moda como ayudante en el taller de la madre de Maury como un amigo de él, pero le apasionaba la moda y realizó un curso de Asesoría de Imagen y Personal Shopper en la Escuela Canaria Imagen y Moda en Las Palmas. Por su lado, Maury realizó un año de un curso de corte y confección en Instituto de La Minilla, también en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Pero el diseñador prefiere la práctica a la teoría: “En seis meses en un taller aprendes más que en tres años en una escuela. En una escuela aprendas sobre los problemas cuando los encuentres, pero allí no te dicen como solucionarlos, tienes que buscar tu mismo. En un taller observas y aprendes“
They decided to launch their own brand because, as they say, they “had nothing to wear”. “The local people who have a similar attitude as us, the Canarians who want to wear something different, something that will stand out, buy their clothes outside the island or on the internet”, tells me Dan, and Maury continues: “we wanted to make something that was missing in Gran Canaria; to represent the people who felt unrepresented”.
Their first collection, summer 2013, was inspired by the 20’s in terms of tailoring and cut but the designers used different colours. By contrast, the winter collection is said to be inspired by postwar Russia. For me, however, it is an ode to femininity.
The clothes from both collections are quite daring with a lot of transparencies. On the other hand, there are also garments which are “correct” but they always have something original in them , like this white top with a spangled black collar which at the back is closed by a string that is neither white nor black, but with animal print, a must have this season. Too bad that I did not take a photo of that string 😦
Ellos decidieron establecer su propia marca porque “No sabían qué ponerse“. “La gente que tiene la misma actitud que nosotros, los Canarios que quieren llevar algo diferente, que destaque, compran la ropa fuera de la isla o por internet“, me cuenta Daniel y Maury continua: “Queríamos hacer algo que faltaba en la isla, representar a la gente que no se sentía representada“.
Su primera colección, la de verano 2013, fue inspirada por los años veinte en la hora de la costura, de la línea, pero cambiaron colores. En cambio, la colección de invierno está inspirada en la Rusia de la postguerra. Pero desde mi punto de vista, es una oda a la feminidad.
Las prendas de ambas colecciones son bastante atrevidas, llenas de transparencias. Por otro lado, hay unas prendas muy “correctas“ pero siempre con un punto original, como esta camiseta blanca con un cuello de lentejuelas, que tiene un hilo detrás para cerrar el cuello y el hilo no es ni blanco ni negro, sino de animal print, un must have en esta temporada. ¡Qué pena que no saqué una foto al hilo para este post!!

The good quality of the garments is evident. They represent very good cut and finish and almost all fabrics are made in Spain. Currently the summer collection, or what was left from it, can be bought in two shops. One of them is El Bosque de Raquel in Leon y Catillo Street. It is there where I tried two tops. How do you like them?
La buena calidad de las prendas es evidente. Poseen una buena terminación y casi todos los tejidos son de origen nacional. Actualmente, su colección de verano se puede comprar en dos tiendas, una de ellas en la tienda El Bosque de Raquel en la C./Leon y Castillo. Allí me probé dos de sus prendas, ¿Les gustan?

Aguadulce Moda Alternativa is a boutique in Vecindario, Gran Canaria. Their motto is ¨We are strange and we know it¨. Most of the clothes and accessories they sell come from other manufacturers but their goal is to introduce more pieces of their own design. The dress that Yazmina is wearing in these photos was designed by herself and made in only one model but I am sure that if you really like it, she will make an identical one for you. Beacause, if you are looking for someone who would make a unique piece of clothing for you, or who would modify a garment so as to adapt it to your figure or imagination, Aguadulce is the place to go in GC.

“La Brújula” Anniversary
On Friday 13.09. (sounds foreboding, doesn´t it?) the local journal La Brújula celebrated its first anniversary. On this occasion we could enjoy a few concerts and a showroom with two Grancanarian brands presenting their stock in The Paper Club. One of them was Aguadulce Moda Alternativa and the other was Mal Kharma. They do not sound familiar to you? Well, hopefully you will hear more about them soon, beginning with my upcoming posts.
El viernes 13.09. (suena siniestro, ¿no?) la revista La Brújula Ocio, Cultura y Restauración celebró su primer aniversario. Por este motivo tuvo lugar una fiesta en The Paper Club. Aparte de unos conciertos había allí un showroom en que dos marcas de ropa grancanarias presentaron sus prendas: Aguadulce Moda Alternativa y Mal Kharma. ¿No te suenan? According to fashion designers, one of the most important colours of the coming season should be burgundy. Along with dozens of other shades of red it is already hitting the streets of Gran Canaria strongly and it is all over the plave. Both the locals and tourists are wearing it in different forms: on clothes, handbags and shoes. I don’t know why, but it’s usually the elderly people who chose the darker shades.
Interestingly, I didn’t see that many people wearing red when I was on short holidays in La Gomera – another of the Canary Islands. And what is it like in the rest of the world? Is red as omnipresent as in Gran Canaria?
Según los diseñadores de moda, uno de los colores más importantes de la temporada que viene debería ser el burdeos. Junto con docenas de otros tonos de rojo, el burdeos empieza su reinado en las calles de Gran Canaria. La gente local y los turistas lo llevan de formas diferentes: en la ropa, en los zapatos y en los bolsos. No sé por qué, pero normalmente son las personas mayores los que optan por los tonos más oscuros.
Curiosamente, no ví tanta gente que llevara el color rojo el poco tiempo que estuve de vacaciones en La Gomera – otra isla canaria. ¿Qué sucede en otras partes del mundo? ¿Está el rojo tan omnipresente como en Gran Canaria?

As promised, here’s a post about straw hats. I don’t know what it’s like in the rest of the world this summer but here in Gran Canaria (as well as in La Gomera) everybody’s wearing hats, mainly straw hats. Women and men. At all ages. And with everything: beach outfit, tracksuit, casual, hippie, elegant, just haven’t seen any grunge + straw hat combination. Well, at least not yet.
Such a hat with broad brim is a particularly useful accessory in the parts of the world where the Sun shines as strongly as in the Canaries – the broader the brim, the more skin it protects from the UV rays, which, as we know, don’t make our skin look younger.
And you, have you already got your summer hat?
Como os prometí, aquí os dejo un post sobre sombreros de paja. No sé si es igual en el resto del mundo este verano, pero aquí en Gran Canaria (y en La Gomera) todo el mundo lleva sombreros, principalmente de paja. Mujeres y hombres. Jóvenes y ancianos. Y los llevan con todo: con ropa de playa, con chándal, con ropa casual, con estilo hippie o elegante. Pero, todavía no he visto una combinación grunge + sombrero de paja. De momento, no.
Un sombrero de ala es un complemento especialmente útil en todas las partes del mundo donde el sol brilla tan fuerte como en Canarias – cuanto más grande, mejor porque protege más la piel de los rayos UV que, como sabemos, no ayudan a la piel a aparecer más joven.
